Shopping for a book

Last summer, I went to buy Harry Potter at Kinokuniya on the day it was released. In Canada, I'd have to wait in a long line, but in Japan it only took me about 2 and a half minutes from door to door!

My Taiko Friends!

Hi there,

Today, I want to tell you about one of my hobbies: Japanese drumming! I started drumming when I lived in Kyoto. My teachers were part of a group called Dotou and they were all junior high school teachers who wanted to spread Japanese culture to the foreign community in Kyoto.

Then, when I returned to Canada in 1997, I joined Oto-wa Taiko. I played in the main group for aboug 3 years and we performed at least once a week. After I came back to Japan in 2000, I stopped playing for a little while, but then wanted to play again, so I sent an email to Mutsumi at Saihoukotengu. She invited me to a practice and I watched this professional group and played a little for them.

They helped find a group for me to practice with; all the other players are men and they are carpenters, painters, and house builders. I am the only female, the only foreigner, and the only English teacher! However, I enjoy playing with them, because they are nice guys!

Last year, I helped start Niji Daiko, which is Siebold's own group! These young women have come a long way in one year and have been performing around Nagasaki! Recently they performed at the Siebold University Festival. They're great!

Finally, I hold workshops about once a month and invite foreign people to come and try taiko. I will announce the next workshop, which will take place next year; please come and try taiko! It's free for Siebold students! You can meet some ALTs and other foreign people who live around Nagasaki. It's a good chance to practice English and learn taiko at the same time!

See you!

Another funny video -- video games and classical music

Hello there,

Please have a look at this! I thought this was so funny for a couple of reasons: first, I grew up with these video games, and second, I love the audience's reaction! I think the people in the audience must be my age.

Do you know these games, I wonder? I think you are all too young, but maybe your parents remember them! Please tell me if you know any of these games!

I remember the first computer games I ever saw were when I was in high school. We had a small tape recorder hooked up to a television screen and used programs which were stored on cassette tapes!

Video games have come a long way!!

Hello again!

Tatsuro hates having his picture taken!

Hello again everyone! Thanks for starting up your wonderful blogs and for responding to mine. I got many interesting comments about my husband and his reaction to be woken up and filmed. Yes, he was very nice about it -- one person wrote that she'd be angry if someone did that to her! So would I actually, but I enjoy teasing him.

The picture above was his reaction to my trying out my new cell phone to take a picture. You can see that he really, REALLY hates having his picture taken. But I love this one -- his hand completely covers his face! It's quite funny!

I'll try to find some funny photos and videos for you. Please visit my blog often and I'll visit yours, too!

See you soon,
Melodie
